Gender Adventure 2

In this project, I want you to investigate how gender impacts various institutions. We have discussed how media, family, and the workplace are gendered. Now, it is your turn to develop and investigate one of the topics I have listed below. Or, you can create one of your own. Truly, you can do whatever you want but I want you to follow a few guidelines to make sure you are rigorous and critical in your research.
Research Guidelines:
Pick a topic. It should examine how gender plays out in an institutional setting. This can include issues of gender in the workplace, family, education, or even more specific topics like health care, immigration, or military service. Below is a list of topics to consider.
State a research question. Once you?ve picked your topic, then you need to set up a research question. For instance, you could ask whether gender matters in impacting career opportunities for women in public education. Once you have this question, think about hypotheses (guesses) as to what you might find when investigating this question.
Collect some scholarly sources. You need to collect at least 5 scholarly sources that cover your chosen topic. A scholarly source includes research articles, non-fiction, research books, or even a few organizational websites that have reports. However, this does not include Wikipedia websites, newspaper articles, or blogs. You can use some of the readings in class if they relate directly to your topic.
Collect data. Probably the most difficult part of this paper is that I want you to collect data through doing observations to answer your research question. You may want to look at government statistics about income differences for women and men in a number of occupations. You can also do surveys or interviews about the gendered roles in participating in fraternities or sororities.
Paper should include:
Statement of the Problem ? describe your topic and what makes it worth studying, which includes doing some fact finding and some sort of literature review. You should also use your scholarly sources to point out the trends or even issues concerning your topics. It should also include your research question, hypotheses, and describe, in depth, how you carried out your research. In other words, beef up your prospectus.
Discussion of your Results ? present your results of your research, highlighting important themes and critiques using your collected data.
Conclusions ? draw conclusions about what you found and how your research answers your research question and explains the existence of the gendered issues. Relate your findings back to your scholarly sources and if it doesn’t support the gender binary, then you have to fully defend why.
You have to provide some sort of appendix that shows me you did the research. For instance, if you decide to do some sort of photographic examination, then there should be pictures. If you collect interviews, then you need to include questions and answers. If you do observations, then I need in-depth notes on your observations (not a few scribbles here and there).
Paper Format/Aesthetics
Paper should have 1 inch margins all the way around.
Use 12 pt. New Times Roman Font and double space the text
Provide a cover sheet with a snappy title, your name, the course name, the number of the writing assignment, and the date.
Include page numbers at the bottom of the page and centered.
There should be virtually no grammatical or spelling errors in the text.
Some Topics/Ideas to Consider:
How do we learn about parenting? – Do a content analysis of parenting books, examining how they explain the roles of mothers and fathers. Or, do an analysis of parenting agencies and organizations and explain how they view the family and gender roles.
How does your family view gender? ? Do interviews with three generations of women and/or men to get your families stories about gender roles and what they think about gender oppression in the family. Or, examine photographs of your family over several generations to understand how they viewed gender and if there are any patterns in which someone was “super-gendered” or left out because they didn?t’ follow the norms.
Is careerism true? ? Obtain university records and interview women and men students at ASU to examine whether men and women are “tracked” into certain majors and later, occupations. Or, examine a selection of university websites and figure out if they are marketing education to men or women. Or, observe your classmates and attempt to find how you, your classmates, or your instructor reproduces gender. Or, interview men and women professors on campus about their views of gender and how they believe it is reproduced on campus. Finally, investigate how education is different for women in different countries and compare and contrast to the U.S. system.
Who’s in charge? ? Speak with women who are local and state government officials about there treatment in a male-dominated profession. Or, you could do a content analysis recent news articles and television coverage concerning prominent women in government, like a comparison between Condolezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi.
How are women portrayed in sports? ? Analyze television coverage of women’s sports, examine magazine articles, or go to girls’ and boys’ sporting events and examine how gender is played out.
Good or bad health? ? Examine the healthcare system and see whether it advantages men or women. Consider interviewing doctors, reviewing health magazines, or doing observations at a clinic or hospital to see who gets the best healthcare. You could also review healthcare plans to see if women or men are treated differently. Or, interview male and female OBGYN and see what’s the difference in these practices when men continue to dominate this field of medicine.
Be all you can be? ? Investigate the treatment of women in the military by considering what occupations women and men are tracked into for the military, interviewing women about their experiences in the military, or examining news articles about how women are viewed as military personnel. Is it possible that women are still seen, used, and portrayed as women even though they are in very masculine roles?
Does religion provide the moral code of gender? ? Compare and contrast religious texts and how they describe gender. Meet with local priests and pastors to compare and contrast their views of gender in the Church and society. Or, find some way in explaining how religion dictates masculine control over the feminine.
