BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Again, Peter makes it clear in 2 Peter 1:20-21 that no scripture “came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.” In other words, as Gospel communicators, we do not have the right to
manipulate the text into saying what we want it to say. Our first task is to figure out, as best as
we can, using the education and tools that we have, what the text meant to its first audience,
those to whom the original text was written.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. For your initial post, discuss:
a. What is the context of Peter’s remarks?
b. To whom is he writing?
c. Why is he saying this to them?
d. What was the “scripture” that Peter was writing about?
e. What does he mean by the “Prophet’s own interpretation”?
f. What does he mean by being “carried along by the Holy Spirit”?
g. What have you learned from the Greek meaning of the words in the devotional?
h. Any other issues you feel are germane to discuss.
